Mentoring Passed On

Julianne

Mentors sometimes find it hard to know if they are truly making a difference in the lives of their mentees.  It is the subtle things that show that mentors do impact youth.

When mentor Julianne Phillips of DTE Energy asked her third grade mentees from Highland Park, "What do you want to be when you grow-up?" she was honored to see Kiera Cardwell reply, "When I grow up I want to be a mentor."

Kiera said because she always has so much fun with Ms. Julianne and loves the time that they get to spend together, she wants to be a mentor just like her when she grows up!  Julianne IS truly making a difference.

Male Mentors Needed

Duane

Duane Marshall of Entrepreneurial Operating Systems has enjoyed his mentoring experience so much that he has been mentoring for ten years, and looks forward to continuing to mentor next year.  He has been matched with the same boys at Henry Ford Academy for four consecutive years now.  Mentee Jalen believes the best thing about having Mr. D as his mentor is they have known each other for so long and they have come to respect each other.  Mentee Emmanuel says, "I think more men should be mentors because it is easier to talk to them, and a man is just different than a woman."

Overall, 70% of children who need mentors are boys, yet only approximately 30% of the mentors are men.  We need more men to be a positive friend and coach to the boys in our program.  Please recruit a male mentor for us to volunteer in Highland Park with younger boys or with high school students in Warren or Pontiac.  He can call (586) 698-4387 or email joan@winningfutures.org.
Student Gives Back
Carrie Rippey, a 1999 Winning Futures scholarship recipient and Cousino High School graduate, along with Bowlingher friend Nikki Smith, hosted a bowling night fundraiser for Winning Futures.  Together they raised nearly $1,000 for the program!  Thank you, Carrie and Nikki, for going the extra mile to support our mentors and mentees!

If you want to donate to Winning Futures, click here.  Please know that every $1 you donate buys a project supply for a student in the program!
